There are so many awesome things we get from our pets: unconditional love, comfort, and, for dog parents, a companion for many long walks. But, we also get messes from our pups. If you’re thinking of replacing your flooring but wondering what type of flooring is best for dogs, you’re in luck! We did the research for you …
Which flooring is best for dogs?
Carpet
It pretty much goes without saying, but as a reminder, carpet is no-good for pet owners. It traps hair, dirt, smells, and everything else your pets track around your house. But we also understand that sometime you have no choice. If that’s the case, try a low pile carpet (or rug on top of existing carpeted floor) so it’s easier to vacuum and wash with a good wet vac.
Hardwood
We love classic hardwood, but the truth is that hardwood is easily scratched, prevents pets from getting traction, and can be damaged by moisture from accidents or pet bowls. If you have hardwood floors, try using mats and maybe even towels under your dog’s bowls to prevent water and drool stains from ruining your floors. If your dog is having a hard time getting around, try adding low pile rugs in strategic places so they can happily trot around.
Concrete, ceramic tile, and natural stone
Concrete is “virtually impervious” to pet stains, and natural stone and ceramic tile are both scratch-proof. The main reason these types of flooring give us pause is that they are slippery surfaces. The Spruce says that some dogs have been known to experience hip injuries from sliding on slippery floors, specially older dogs. These types of floors are better in small spaces, such as mud rooms and laundry rooms, which can be gated or closed off and used as a little doggy holding area while potty training.
Luxury vinyl
Thick, durable, resistant to scratching, grippy, soft, and affordable … there are so many reasons why luxury vinyl flooring is the best kind for dog owners. You can even find waterproof styles that will make it easier to deal with drool, water bowl splashes, and potty accidents.
