The new year is a fresh start, and nothing’s quite as fresh as a home that’s just been deep cleaned. We’re talking about sparkling surfaces, perfectly organized drawers and cupboards, and zero dust bunnies hiding under the couch. Here’s how to deep clean your home for the new year!
Step 1: Stock Up on Supplies
Once you’re in the deep cleaning groove, you won’t want to run out for more supplies. Millennial Homeowner has a pretty complete list—here’s a sneak peek.
Rubber gloves
Sponges
Bucket(s)
Microfiber cloths
Broom and dust pan
Duster
Floor mop
Toilet brushes
Garbage bags
Step 2: Work Top to Bottom
Better Homes & Gardens suggests cleaning your rooms top to bottom. Start with ceilings, light fixtures, walls, trim, baseboards, and then the floor. That will ensure that dust and dirt that fall from up high will be caught as you clean toward the bottom. A wet mop with a drop of dish soap is all you need for most of these surfaces, (except for the floor).
Step 3: Wash Those Windows
Wipe out the sills and window tracks (or vacuum for larger bits), then spray with glass cleaner and wipe away with a microfiber cloth or squeegee. Hello, natural light!
Step 4: Don’t Forget to Dust
Grab your Swiffer or other duster and wipe every surface you can find: spindles on your stairs and wood chairs, knick-knacks, picture frames, books … you name it.
Step 5: Focus on the Floors
Sweep, dust, mop, let dry. Sweeping gets big particles, dusting makes sure the surface can be easily mopped, and letting it dry keeps your surfaces shiny and clean (and free of dirty footprints). Try using furniture slides under heavy furniture so you don’t throw your back out!
Step 6: Freshen Your Mattresses
When your mattress is bare, sprinkle baking soda on it. Let that sit for an hour and vacuum it up.
Step 7: Scour the Shower
Deep cleaning is the perfect time to make that shower door sparkle! Use our shower cleaning guide to make sure your bathroom feels like a fancy spa.
Step 8: Get Organized
A deep cleaning session should include organizing key clutter areas of the home, whether that’s the pantry, your closets, or your kids’ rooms. Invest in organizers, label those containers, and donate or sell anything you don’t need.
